Jose Pirela optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

PirelaAfter today’s game, the Yankees optioned utility infielder Jose Pirela to Triple-A.

The move suggests the Yankees might have been planning all along to keep Pirela only long enough to play today’s game against a left-handed starter. The Andrew Miller injury also suggests the Yankees might have had something else up their sleeve with the Ramon Flores demotion: By rule, Flores can come right back as a replacement for an injured player.

The Yankees will obviously bring up a pitcher to take Miller’s spot in the pen, but they could — if they want to do it — use Miller’s spot to recall Flores right away, then use Pirela’s spot to bring up the new pitcher. It’s a possibility. Not sure the Yankees will do that, though. No moves beyond the Pirela demotion and the Miller injury have been announced.
