TIME/TV: 1:05 p.m., YES Network
WEATHER: A few clouds in the sky, but ultimately a nice day for a day game. Very, very slight breeze blowing out to left, but doesn’t seem to be anything significant.
UMPIRES: HP Eric Cooper, 1B Lance Barksdale, 2B Quinn Wolcott, 3B Gary Cederstrom
MILESTONE WATCH: Alex Rodriguez is still three RBI shy of becoming the second player in Major League history to officially reach 2,000 career RBI. He’s also nine hits away from No. 3,000.
PARTING GIFT: Last night, Ramon Flores became the fourth Yankee in the past 10 seasons to have a three-hit game within his first nine career games (Yangervis Solarte, Zoilo Almonte and Eduardo Nunez also did it). Three of Flores’ seven career hits have come off former Cy Young winners (two of Max Scherzer, one off Felix Hernandez).
ON THIS DATE: On June 10, 2002, Marcus Thames homered off Randy Johnson on the first pitch he saw as a Major League hitter. Pretty cool, but not as cool as June 10, 1994 when Pink Floyd performed the first of two consecutive nights at Yankee Stadium.
UPDATE, 1:32 p.m.: Scoreless through two innings. Beltran’s two-out walk in the second is the game’s only base runner so far.
UPDATE, 1:42 p.m.: Back-to-back doubles in the third and the Nats have a 1-0 lead.
UPDATE, 1:48 p.m.: Brendan Ryan: 1.000 batting average.
UPDATE, 2:15 p.m.: Solo homer by Espinosa pushes the lead to 2-0. Nationals have four hits through five innings.
UPDATE, 2:42 p.m.: Eovaldi’s giving the Yankees a chance, but they need some runs. Eovaldi’s allowed two runs through six innings, but the Yankees are still scoreless with only one hit (a Brendan Ryan single).
UPDATE, 2:52 p.m.: Yankees got their second hit in the sixth inning. Still looking for their first run, though. It’s still 2-0 heading into the seventh.
UPDATE, 3:14 p.m.: RBI double by Gardner and the Yankees have tied the game at 2 in the seventh. Ryan’s triple is the key hit of the game so far.
UPDATE, 3:19 p.m.: Alex Rodriguez with a two-out, RBI double to center field. Huge hand clap when he got to second base. Yankees in front 3-2 with a three-run, four-hit inning. Three of the four Yankees hits this inning went for extra bases.
UPDATE, 3:22 p.m.: And now a McCann single that hit second base and popped over Desmond’s head. Little bit of luck never hurts. It’s 4-2 Yankees.
UPDATE, 3:30 p.m.: Lindgren in to face Harper. First time in his pro career Harper’s ever faced a pitcher younger than him.
UPDATE, 3:31 p.m.: Lindgren gets a routine fly ball to left.
UPDATE, 3:34 p.m.: Oh man. Girardi tried to give Lindgren a high leverage opportunity. Lindgren got two outs, then gave up a game-tying two-run homer. Second big home run Lindgren’s allowed since coming up from Triple-A. We’re all tied at 4. Worth noting that it seemed the Yankees had a chance to turn two on the previous batter, but Drew couldn’t make the turn at second. Might have had trouble getting the ball out of his glove.
UPDATE, 3:38 p.m.: Not sure whether Betances is available. Not the sort of thing Girardi is likely to announce pregame if he’s not. Threw just 14 pitches yesterday and 15 on Sunday.
