Yankees set to add eight, including Andrew Bailey, on September 1

Rob Refsnyder

The Yankees have announced their first wave of September call-ups. Before tomorrow’s game the team will add eight players from the Triple-A roster. Four of them will require opening spots on the 40-man roster, but those details have not been announced. Here are the players who will be up tomorrow.

Austin Romine
Catcher
Removed from the 40-man after spring training, but an injury to Gary Sanchez opened a path for Romine to return as the customary third catcher. Was a Triple-A all-star but numbers faded in the second half.

Rob Refsnyder
Second baseman
Organization’s top second base prospect had two hits in each of his past two games and could presumably get some platoon at-bats in front of Brendan Ryan if the Yankees decide to trust him in that role.

Jose Pirela
Utility
Struggled in a big league bench role earlier this season, but he’s thrived since returning to Triple-A. Brings lots of versatility and should bring some speed and occasional offense.

Dustin Ackley
Second baseman/outfielder
Experienced left-handed bat. He hit .471 with two homers while rehabbing in Triple-A the past five games. Can play second base and all three outfield positions. Coming off the disabled list, where he landed after playing just two games following his trade from Seattle.

Rico Noel
Pinch runner
Might be labeled an outfielder, but his role with the Yankees is strictly running the bases. Was used almost exclusively as a pinch runner for the past month to prepare for this role. Has 283 career stolen bases, 23 of them coming this season.

Andrew Bailey
Right-handed reliever
Former all-star closer spent the past two years working his way back from shoulder surgery. He’s pitched well in both Double-A and Triple-A this year and will get a look as additional bullpen depth.

Caleb Cotham
Right-handed reliever
Returning to the big leagues after a couple of call-ups earlier this season. Can pitch multiple innings so he adds some length the pen whenever necessary. Should eventually be joined by Nick Goody and Nick Rumbelow when they’re eligible to return.

James Pazos
Left-handed reliever
Largely unheralded until last season but pitched very well in both Double-A and Triple-A this season. Could give the Yankees a lower-leverage left-on-left option before going to Chasen Shreve, Justin Wilson or Andrew Miller in bigger spots.
