A football-neutral Jeb Bush ventures into gameday in Athens

Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush ventured into the minefield of a football gameday at Athens, where he addressed a few hundred selfie-taking Bulldog fans near one of the biggest tailgating areas on campus.
Bush clad himself in football-neutral colors, wearing a white shirt. That’s no small consideration considering the import of Saturday’s Georgia-South Carolina game.

South Carolina, of course, is an all-important early-voting state, and Bush and other candidates have spent considerable time there trying to build support. But he’s also visited Georgia a half-dozen or so times in the past year ahead of this state’s March 1 primary. (You can read more about the tricky situation by clicking here.)

The former Florida governor was mobbed by students as he made the short walk with Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, an early supporter, from a fundraiser at the Classic Center to a tailgate on the historic North Campus. He mugged for pictures with Georgia fans for far longer than he spoke.

“I’m gonna be very brief because I like taking selfies,” he warned the students.

In his short stump speech, Bush talked of a big tent approach he envisions for the Republican Party.

“I believe a conservative can win with our arms wide open. A lot of people are one paycheck away from disaster,” he said, adding: “We need to reform all these things for the great middle of our country.”

He also doled out some red meat to the college crowd, earning him some of the biggest cheers of his short talk.

“I believe the economy can grow by 4 percent for as far as the eye can see – so that when you graduate a job will be waiting for you,” he said.
