Ackley, Sabathia lead Yankees to Subway Series win

Travis d'Arnaud, Dustin Ackley

Remember when the baseball world couldn’t stop talking about Matt Harvey’s innings limit? Who would have guess that issue would play a role in getting the Yankees back within reach of the division lead?

Harvey was pulled after allowing one hit through five innings, and the Yankees immediately and thoroughly pounced on the Mets’ bullpen for an 11-2 win in tonight’s Subway Series finale. It was the Yankees’ second straight win, putting them just two games behind the Blue Jays in the loss column heading into these next three games in Toronto.

After seven strikeouts through 77 pitches, Harvey did not return to the mound for the sixth inning, and the Yankees immediately scored five runs off reliever Hansel Robles to pull ahead 5-1. Carlos Beltran had a go-ahead, two-run double, but the bigger blow was a two-out, three-run home run by Dustin Ackley who was getting his second consecutive start ahead of Stephen Drew at second base. The Yankees went on to add six more runs off the Mets’ bullpen, three of them on a Greg Bird homer in the eighth.

As important as the offense was yet another gem from CC Sabathia. After allowing an RBI double to the second batter he faced, Sabathia wound up pitching through the sixth inning without allowing another run. He struck out seven, walked three and got his first win since July 8. Using a new knee brace that makes it easier to throw at max-effort without pain, Sabathia has now delivered three strong starts since coming off the disabled list earlier this month. He has a 2.56 ERA in seven starts since the end of July.
