Moore vs. Yankees
TIME/TV: 1:05 p.m., FS1
WEATHER: Wind blowing in from left field. Another nice day.
UMPIRES: HP D.J. Rayburn, 1B Ben May, 2B Rob Drake, 3B Joe West
LEFT ON LEFT: Not a bad day to have Brett Gardner hitting leadoff. He’s a career .333/.538/.556 hitter against Matt Moore. That’s in nine at-bats, more than any other Yankees hitter has against the Rays starter.
GOOD START AT HOME: The Yankees have now won the opening game of their past seven home stands. They are also 10-5 following off days this season.
ON THIS DATE: It was on September 5, 2007 that Bob Sheppard worked his final game at the Yankees’ PA announcer. It was a 10-2 win against Seattle and Alex Rodriguez hit two homers in an eight-run seventh.
UPDATE, 1:15 p.m.: Strikeout and double play get Eovaldi out of the first inning after a leadoff single.
UPDATE, 1:56 p.m.: Man, it’s awfully quiet out here today. Eovaldi allowe da run in the second inning, and now he’s loaded the bases with one out — on two walks and a hit batter — in the third. He’s already thrown 53 pitches and he’s gotten just seven outs.
UPDATE, 1:59 p.m.: Eovaldi made a good pitch to get Forsythe looking, but Cabrera followed with a two-out single that scored two and pushed the Rays lead to 3-0. I really thought Eovaldi would dominate today. Instead he’s trailing 3-0 in the middle of the third.
UPDATE, 2:45 p.m.: Yankees are on the board with an RBI double by Gregorius. Murphy scored from first on a questionable send by Espada. It ultimately worked, obviously, when the throw home actually hit Murphy. I’m just not sure it’s worth risking a bang-bang play when there are no outs.
UPDATE, 2:47 p.m.: Now the Yankees have a second run on an RBI ground out by Gardner.
UPDATE, 3:32 p.m.: Shreve just walked two batters in the seventh, and now Warren is in to face Brandon Guyer with two on and one out. Yankees still down 3-2. Only eight hits in this game.
UPDATE, 3:51 p.m.: Pirela pinch hit for Ryan to start this inning (he struck out). Now Jacoby Ellsbury is pinch hitting for Chris Young.
UPDATE, 4:05 p.m.: Nice catch at the wall by Gardner to end the top of the eighth. Yankees still within a run with the heart of the order coming up.
UPDATE, 4:08 p.m.: Not all of the Yankees lack of hitting has been bad luck this afternoon, but this eighth inning just started with Rodriguez grounding sharply up the middle and Beltran lining a rocket along the first-base line. A-Rod’s ball was hit into the shift and Beltran’s was snagged by Loney. Could be runners at the corners with no outs, instead it’s none on and two outs.
UPDATE, 4:22 p.m.: Gregorius smoked a line drive to second, but it’s caught to end the inning with the bases loaded. Second line drive out of the inning, and Gregorius flung his bat nearly into the Yankees’ dugout.
UPDATE, 4:23 p.m.: James Pazos making his big league debut.
