Who is out second on ‘Dancing With the Stars’?

DANCING WITH THE STARS - “Episode 2102” - The couples geared up for one of the toughest weeks of the competition this season with two live shows and a double elimination. In "Hometown Glory" night, each couple danced two new dance styles to songs that reminded the celebrity and pro dancer of the places that shaped who they are today. At the end of the night, the couple with the lowest combined judges and viewer votes from last week was eliminated, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 (8:00-10:01 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network. After just three dances, it’s clear that Tamar Braxton and Bindi Irwin are positioning themselves for the finale of “Dancing With the Stars” in November. Nick Carter and the married PenaVegas are battling for the third spot at this early stage.

Tamar had the best score of the night with a super Charleston (25), followed by a redemptive Carter (24).

It was a tough week because the celebrities had to learn two dances in one week. Some suffered but most held up surprisingly well.

The bottom two tonight were Gary Busey and Victor Espinosa. Despite his cheerfulness, the horse jockey was the second one out.

The scores were based on Monday night’s judges and performances. So Espinosa’s much better third dance tonight didn’t matter.

Kim Zolciak’s greatly improved second foxtrot Monday clearly saved her after her disastrous opening salsa.

Carrie Ann Inaba must have noticed she was being awfully nice Monday so tonight, she was a tougher than the other judges in general.

Here are quick recaps:

Hayes Grier (Vine star) – He keeps on improving, finding plenty of pep with his quickstep. Score: 23 (8s from Carrie and Bruno and 7 from Julianne)

Carlos PenaVega (actor) – After a solid foxtrot yesterday, he struggled a bit on his cha-cha-cha and ended up with a 21 (7s).

Gary Busey (actor) His pase doble was fun to watch but the dance content was limited. Judge score: 15 (5s)

Andy Grammer (singer) – Allison Holker gave him an impressively difficult contemporary dance and he did pretty well. I agree with Bruno: he struggled on the lift (and the fear on his face was obvious!). Score: 23 (8s from Julianne and Carrie Ann, 7 from Bruno)

Alexa PenaVega (rumba) – A mesmerizing rumba. Thank you, Mark Ballas! Carrie said it had “moments of brilliance but didn’t quite come together.” The judges were pretty tough on her. Score: 22 (7s from Julianne and Carrie Ann, 8 from Bruno)

Paula Deen (tango) – She embraced this one, feeling more comfortable on the floor. She had fun with it despite admitting to bungling a few steps that cost her. Carrie Ann: “You are so sexy! However, as Louis pointed out, you made a few mistakes.” Score: 18 (6s)

Bindi Irwin (waltz) – So pretty, so wonderful, so deep for a teen. Julianne loves her comfortable in her skin and her willingness to show different sides of her. “So moving,” Bruno said. “Always of the moment.” Carrie Ann loved the connection but she penalized her for a lift that is not allowed in a waltz. Score: 23 (8s from Bruno and Julianne, 7 from Carrie Ann)

Kim Zolciak (foxtrot) – Again, Tony gave her very simple (read: very basic) choreography but she has clearly gotten less nervous and came across well. Bruno: “Don’t play it safe. You need to push it further.” Carrie Ann: “You are a better dancer than you think you are. You move beautifully. There is a sensuality and flow… Sometimes you drop the energy out of the dance. I want to see more.” Julianne: “When you hit the line, you stop and the energy stops. Travel and use that energy moving forward.”  Score: 18 (6s)

Alek Skarlatos (hero) – I thought this was a very solid, if unmemorable quick step. Carrie Ann saw some mistakes. Score: 22 (7s from Julianne and Carrie Ann, 8 from Bruno)

Victor Espinosa (jockey) – He was very intense during his rumba and pulled it off despite the obvious size difference with Karina Smirnoff. Judges clearly saw this has his best dance to date. Score: 20 (6 from Carrie Ann and 7s from Bruno and Julianne)

Nick Carter (singer) – This was not the most complex foxtrot but Nick did it cleanly, which is clearly what he wanted after Monday’s fumbles for Sharna Burgess, his dance partner. Bruno: “Nick is back on track.” Carrie Ann: “There was poetry in your dance tonight.” Julianne: “You got out of your own head and focused on Sharna.” Score: 24 (8s)

Tamar Braxton (singer, reality star) – She gets the pimp spot because the producers know she can move. And she takes the cake tonight with a delightfully fun Charleston. Carrie Ann: “You killed it!” Julianne: “It was seamless. The connection was so on point.” Bruno: “That was so uplifting, so energizing. There were elements of Lindy Hop and Jitterbug.” Score: 25 (8s from Carrie Ann and Julianne and a 9 from Bruno, the first 9 of the season from him).
