Pregame notes: Ellsbury out with a sore hip

Jacoby Ellsbury

Turns out, when Jacoby Ellsbury made a diving attempt last night, he not only played a single — or an out — into a triple, he also hurt himself in the process. Ellsbury is out of today’s lineup with a sore hip, and it’s not a given that he’ll be ready to play again on Friday.

“Sore hip from yesterday from diving on that ball,” Joe Girardi said. “He wasn’t running great at the end of the night. He’s sore. We’ll see where he’s at. I’m not sure if I have him available.”

But surely a day off today and an off day tomorrow will be enough to get Ellsbury back in the lineup, right?

“There was some swelling in it,” Girardi said. “We haven’t done any tests. I hope we do (have him), but I can’t tell you for sure.”

Why not take Ellsbury out of last night’s game? Apparently, the signs of trouble didn’t show up until late in the game. At that point, the Yankees were basically out of alternatives.

“At that point, I didn’t really have any players left to put in,” Girardi said.

Mark Teixeira• Little surprise that Mark Teixeira isn’t in the lineup. He indicated last night that he didn’t expect to play today. “For Tex, it’s always sorest in the morning,” Girardi said. “He’s sore today, (which is) pretty usual. This way he’ll get two days. He’s available to me as a pinch hitter, but he’s still sore. It’s not where we want it. We rolled the dice a little bit yesterday. We were facing a lefty. Hopefully when we get to Atlanta it’ll be better.”

• What about two-inning reliever Brendan Ryan? Is he available? “I have not seen him,” Girardi said. “But I would think a little bit (sore). He’ll be a player.”

• So basically the Yankees’ bench is a backup catcher, a utility infielder with a sore arm, a pinch hitter with a sore leg, and a guy who can’t play at all. That might not be an issue today, but that’s a long way from ideal if the Yankees are still thin heading into a National League city.

• The Yankees have called up Nick Goody, and obviously they’re going to activate Michael Pineda from the disabled list, but the team has not announced any moves. I would think Chris Capuano will be DFA again and Nick Rumbelow will be optioned back to Triple-A — those are the two who pitched last night — but there’s been no announcement.

• Michael Pineda got well over 60 pitches in his second minor league rehab start, so he’s fairly stretched out. “He should be able to give us 80 pitches, 85 pitches today,” Girardi said. “He threw 72 his last outing. He threw 10 more in the bullpen, I think. He should be able to give us 85.”
